Supporting Children's Numeracy
Workshop on September 24th, 2011
Speaker: Dr Lio Moscardini, University of Strathclyde
The objectives of this workshop are for teachers to:
- consider mathematical learning as a sense-making process
- discover what recent research reveals about learning (and teaching) maths, especially when working with children who struggle
- develop their understanding of children’s developmental progression in maths
- learn about pedagogical approaches to identify and support children who struggle in maths
- be able to identify and teach children who are mathematically able.
Anyone who teaches mathematics at primary or secondary level will find this workshop stimulating and valuable, as the approach is developmental rather than curricular.
Dr Moscardini is a lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Strathclyde, whose teaching focuses on learning support while his research interests concern inclusive practices and pedagogy particularly with regard to pupils with learning difficulties. He has extensive experience in teaching mathematics to children with learning difficulties.
He was a member of an EU commission team involving ten European states, reporting on inclusion and education. He is also a member of the Scottish Additional Support Needs Tribunals.
Lio has taught in primary and secondary schools, both in special needs and in mainstream schools. Prior to joining the University in 2007 he was Deputy Head Teacher of a school for pupils with moderate learning difficulties.
The workshop will take place on Saturday 24th of September from 09.00 – 16.30 at Hull’s School, 28A Falkenstrasse, Zurich.
The cost is CHF 200, including lunch.
A certificate of attendance will be given.
