We start with an interview involving the child/student and one or both parents, which takes about an hour. This helps us to build a picture of how we should assess the learning profile. We review recent school reports, reports from previous assessments, and anything else that might be relevant to help us identify the main issues and decide the most appropriate assessment plan.
ASSESSMENTS AND REPORT
The two most common assessments are the school-based assessment for children who seem to be struggling with some aspect of their social, academic or emotional life at school, and the broad-spectrum diagnostic assessment for children who appear to have an underlying learning difficulty in a specific area.
These scientific, research based assessments, which are carried out by psychologists, education support practitioners and other specialists, help us to develop effective educational and behavioural strategies. A comprehensive assessment typically includes observations, interviews, and measures of intelligence, academic achievement, psychological processing, and social, emotional, and behavioural functioning. The information gathered from these assessments is then integrated and presented in a single report.
PLAN AND STRATEGY
The report includes a learning profile and a management plan, which are discussed with the student, parents and teachers. This process helps the student to understand their learning profile and helps him or her to buy in to the strategies that are outlined.
IMPLEMENTATION AND FOLLOW-UP
During implementation of the management plan, the student, parents and teachers are encouraged to keep in close contact with us. We hold a formal follow-up review three months into the implementation of the plan, to check on progress and to plan any further steps.
